Here is our latest blog post.
It’s based on a card that our good mate Julia Watts showed us at our recent Craftathon in Nottingham.
It uses Phill’s Essential Montage Stamps and Distress Oxides to create the background layers. The die used are Sue Wilson Caroline Frame and Tag, Orange Blossom Leaves and Petite Vinery Leaves.

Faded Jeans and Shaded Lilac
Stage 1 – cut out all the layers and die cuts needed as below.
- Base Card is 17cm x 17cm
- Layer 1 – 16.5cm x 16.5cm (inked)
- Layer 2 – 16cm x 16cm (eventually)
- x3 A5 pieces of card (trim to 14cm wide)
- Die Cuts
- Caroline Die (solid frame, lacy frame and topper)
- Orange Blossom Flowers x 5 (plus small stamens if you wish)
- Petite Vinery Leaves x 1
- x2 sheets of A4 paper
Stage 2 – the first stage is to create the x3 background pieces that are used to make the mosaic layer. To do this you need to do different things to each piece of card.
- Piece 1 – simply wipe over the two ink pads onto the card to create a dragged effect
- Piece 2 – pat out the two inks onto a blending mat, spritz with water enough to see water droplets. Gently press the card piece into the lighter colour first picking up sections of ink colour. Then do the same with the darker ink, but don’t pic up as much colour. This should create a splattered effect
- Piece 3 – create the splattered effect again, but when fully dry stamp images all over the piece using the two ink colours. Cover quite a lot of the card otherwise you will not see the images when it is cut up. Keep the card portrait style
Stage 3 – Ink the background piece of the die cut topper and colour your flowers. Ink the edge of the plain square layer
Stage 4 – Stamp your sentiment on the small topper with ink or embossing powder
Stage 5 – to create the mosaic background, cut the A5 pieces into 2cm strips length ways (keep portrait style). You should end up with 3 piles of card in 2cm strips (dragged, splattered and splattered/stamped)
Stage 5 – using a piece of A4 paper in landscape style glue each strip in order from left to right trying to keep the strips straight and butting up to each other. Set aside to dry fully.
Stage 6 – working in portrait style cut the sheet into 2 cm strips lengthways to make a big pile the same
Stage 7 – using another piece of A4 paper in landscape style stick the first strip across the top of the sheet end to end. Stick the next strip one square in (it will hang one square off at the end). Stick the next strip another square in (it will hang off two squares at the end). Then start the process again from the end of the paper, moving 1 square then another square. Keep going until the sheet is filled. Set aside to dry fully.
Stage 8 – when the mosaic sheet is dry trim to 16cm x 16cm. Glue this layer flat to the inked square and then to the base card.
Stage 9 – shape your flowers and assemble your card. Use glitter and pearls if you wish!
